Plant to make airport apron electrobuses in Russia’s Smolensk Oblast
SMOLENSK, 22 May (BelTA) – A plant for manufacturing low-floor airport apron electrobuses of the MAZ brand will be built in Smolensk Oblast. The ceremony to lay a commemorative capsule took place at the site of the future industrial facility on 22 May, BelTA has learned.
A MAZ maintenance and service center will be set up simultaneously with the plant. The solemn ceremony was attended by Ambassador of Belarus to Russia Yuri Seliverstov, Governor of Smolensk Oblast Vasily Anokhin, and Director General of OAO MAZ – managing company of the holding company BelavtoMAZ Valery Ivankovich.
Yuri Seliverstov noted that this event marks the next stage in the development of Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ trademark) and its cooperation with Russia and Smolensk Oblast. “Once upon a time, nobody thought that such modern electrobuses could drive in airports. We were focused on other suppliers, but elements of sanctions and elements of a certain shortage of machines and vehicles pushed us toward such joint projects,” he said.
The ambassador drew attention to the fact that there are not many airports in Belarus, which is why this ambitious project will be focused primarily on the Russian market. “Together with our Russian colleagues, we are working on the Osvey aircraft, which will be used precisely in small airports. This will make it possible to increase the number of such air harbors. Naturally, more transport will be needed there, and these vehicles will be in demand,” Yuri Seliverstov added.
“I want to say thank you very much to the leadership of the Republic of Belarus for this decision, and to President Aleksandr Lukashenko, who backed this project,” the governor of Smolensk Oblast said at the ceremony. “Belarusian enterprises are reliable partners for the industry of both the Russian Federation as a whole and Smolensk Oblast.”
He stated that this enterprise will become the first one in Russia to manufacture this type of vehicles. “For our part, we will do everything possible to ensure that this project is implemented,” the governor assured.
“It brings new jobs, new knowledge and competencies, a new brand, and a new step forward within the framework of the joint development of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation,” added Valery Ivankovich, Director General of OAO MAZ – managing company of the holding company BelavtoMAZ.
