Lukashenko promises support to private farmers

Lukashenko promises support to private farmers

KIROVSK DISTRICT, 28 August (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has assured that support is available to those willing to farm crops in the country. Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement during a working trip to Mogilev Oblast on 28 August, BelTA has learned.

The head of state recalled that back in the day, after the collapse of the Soviet Union it was necessary to take care of reviving the once successful agricultural enterprises that fell on hard times in the 1990s. A number of countries decided to accomplish the goal by selling the land. But Belarus made a different choice and nowadays state-run agricultural enterprises operate efficiently. In this well-established and smoothly operating system it is possible, for instance, to allocate some lands to private farmers for the sake of agricultural work.

“Back then I had to demonstrate that we would go down this path, the path of large-scale agricultural enterprises. But if someone wants to be a private farmer, go ahead, here is land for you. There are no problems at all these days. Take any agricultural enterprise. Naturally, nobody would give you OAO Rassvet. You have to understand that people would fight for this Rassvet or for some lands. After all, these are peasants. The system should not be broken. It is necessary to act carefully,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.

There are no problems with setting up private farming enterprises these days, he added. But the problem is that many of those, who apply to get farmlands, are intent on engaging in large-scale farming operations but on a private level. “Go ahead. We have some. But let me tell you right away that certainly, no one will give away the agricultural enterprises that operate well. They represent a majority. If they work, we let them work. But in a situation where a private owner can make a contribution, we will surely support them,” the head of state stated.

“We talk to those, who work,” he added.
