Lukashenko: Belarus needs 50-100 years to find its place in world economy

MINSK, 26 September (BelTA) – Belarus might need 50-100 years to carve its niche in the world economy, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Ukrainian journalists on 26 September, BelTA has learned.

When asked how Belarus is getting ready for an anticipated global economic crisis, Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that the country should always be ready for such challenges. At the same time the president believes that it is hard to avoid such economic threats for a number of reasons.

“We both are a piece of the huge empire. It does not matter that 25 years passed since the collapse of the Soviet Union. We are not firmly embedded in the global economic system, we can veer to the left or to the right. Therefore, we might need 50 to 100 years to find our place the way relatively small countries like Finland, Austria and Switzerland did. Maybe, our time of stability in the global scale has not come yet,” the head of state said.

“We do not have as many reserves as Russia, China or America do. Therefore, we will have to adapt someway in order to retain the country and save our people. We are forewarned, but not yet forearmed. Neither are you,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
