European Commission delegation to visit Belarusian nuclear power plant in September

MINSK, 15 September (BelTA) – A delegation of the European Commission will visit the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in September, BelTA learned from Dmitry Mironchik, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on 15 September.

According to the source, a European Commission delegation will be in Belarus on 19-20 September on a working visit. While in Belarus members of the delegation will meet with top officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Negotiations will be held in the Energy Ministry, the Emergencies Ministry, and the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry. Representatives of the European Commission will also visit the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

The sides are expected to discuss a large number of matters and interaction concerning the implementation of the first Belarusian nuclear energy program, however, stress testing to determine risks and safety of the nuclear power plant will be the focal point of the visit.

The Press Secretary reminded that due to the accident at the Japanese nuclear power plant in March 2011 the European Commission and the group of European nuclear safety regulators have worked out methods to comprehensively assess risks and threats to the nuclear power plants, which are in use in the European Union. These methods are commonly known as stress tests. “Belarus highly prioritizes nuclear safety matters. This is why our country uses as many instruments of the relevant international organizations as possible,” noted Dmitry Mironchik.
