Eurasian Economic Union procedures to help alleviate Belarus-Russia food trade issues

MOSCOW, 22 November (BelTA) – Mechanisms of the Eurasian Economic Union are not used in full measure to resolve disputes concerning Belarusian food export to Russia. The statement was made by State Secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Grigory Rapota on the sidelines of the expert and media forum held in Moscow on 22 November to discuss humanitarian partnership in the Union State, BelTA has learned.

The official said: “We have not fully used the available mechanism for resolving various disputes. The Eurasian Economic Union offers such a mechanism. It has a system in place in case one side complains about another. These procedures should be followed. I think if the procedures are followed strictly, the degree of the problem will be much lower.”

Speaking about the idea to set up an independent lab to evaluate food quality, Grigory Rapota noted he is in favor of any initiative that can help reduce tensions in food trade. “If some independent lab is acceptable for both sides, if it helps resolve the problem, we will support it,” noted the state secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia.

Grigory Rapota went on saying that during the recent session of the Union State Council of Ministers’ high-level group they discussed the establishment of a universal information system, which could help resolve the problem among other things.
