Construction of Belarus' terminal in Murmansk discussed at Lukashenko's meeting

MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko discussed with Russia’s Murmansk Oblast Governor Andrei Chibis the project to build a Belarusian terminal in Murmansk, BelTA has learned.

The governor shared details with journalists following the meeting. According to him, various aspects were examined in depth, including the potential use of the Northern Sea Route, the trans-Arctic transport corridor, and the broader opportunities of the Arctic.

“Developing this direction is one of the key priorities for our country. What matters most is that there is enormous potential here for partnership with our Belarusian colleagues. We discussed in detail different options for developing cargo logistics to and from Belarus through the port of Murmansk and via the Northern Sea Route,” Andrei Chibis said.

The governor described the project to build a Belarusian terminal in Murmansk as a complex one, in part because it requires taking into account the railway’s throughput capacity for delivering cargo to the port. “We discussed this in great detail during the closed part of the meeting. We agreed that together with our colleagues at the government level we will once again carefully calculate all possible models,” the regional head explained.

Andrei Chibis emphasized that Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed strong interest not only in organizing the export of Belarusian cargo through the Murmansk port, but also in receiving transit cargo from China. “The possibility of sending cargo in one direction and receiving [shipments] from Asia in return is precisely what can give this project real viability. Even though the current investment climate is challenging, this is our strategic project,” he added.
