MINSK, 13 August (BelTA) – Belarus intends to develop coin production, with a focus on precious metal coins, Chairman of Belarus’ National Bank Roman Golovchenko said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel on 12 August, BelTA reports.

The Gomel-based Kristall jewelry plant has undergone minor updates and minted its first gold coin, named Slavyanka, using Belarusian raw materials. The coin was presented to the head of state on 12 August.

The chairman outlined further plans for commemorative coin production. “We have a roadmap for development of various coin types, primarily in precious metals. This is being coordinated with the Finance Ministry, since Kristall operates under its structure. There is no need to rush. We will proceed gradually based on economic feasibility. However, this is a promising direction, as demand remains consistently high among both private individuals and legal entities,” Roman Golovchenko said.

He noted that many view such coins as investment assets, since the National Bank-issued precious metal coins are subject to mandatory buyback. “Some investors anticipate profits from rising precious metal prices, while others purchase them as gifts or souvenirs for foreign partners. Our coins have repeatedly won awards at prestigious international contests. We have a great design team. This is becoming a national brand. Every country seeks to issue its own precious metal coins,” Roman Golovchenko emphasized.
