Belarus, Russia to elaborate roaming wind-down plan by 1 August

MINSK, 7 July (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia are set to come up with a roadmap to gradually reduce roaming costs between the two countries. The document is to be ready by 1 August. Such an arrangement was reached during the bilateral talks to discuss cooperation prospects in communications. The information about the outcomes of the meeting is available on the website of the Belarusian Communications and Informatization Ministry, BelTA has learned.

Top on the agenda of the meeting was Belarus-Russia cooperation in communications, including transit of international phone traffic between Russia and the EU via the territory of Belarus.

The parties discussed efforts to harmonize the work of Belarusian and Russian mobile network operators with a view to cheapening roaming services in the Union State. The parties agreed to elaborate a roadmap providing for gradual reduction of roaming charges between Belarusian and Russian mobile network operators. The document is to be drafted by 1 August.

The participants of the session agreed to hold a joint session of the boards of the Communications and Informatization Ministry of Belarus and the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of Russia in Smolensk on 10 August to hold a further discussion of joint cooperative efforts.

The Belarusian delegation was led by Communications and Informatization Minister Sergei Popkov, the Russian delegation was led by Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media Konstantin Noskov. Taking part in the talks were mobile network operators of the two countries.
