Belarus recycling industry urged to do better

MINSK, 11 May (BelTA) – We should recycle 50-60% of waste and increase usage of recycled materials in Belarus, Belarus’ President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he visited the Students Village, BelTA has learned.

The head of state visited the Students Village to inspect a new catering facility for participants of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019. The president was disappointed to learn that the facility intends to use plastic dishes. “Enough of plastic. Not only do we poison people. We also damage the environment. Belarus will soon turn into a dump site. This has to stop,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “We have as much paper and glass as we could possibly want. Let us produce recycled materials. They will be more expensive but people will understand that paying more they will also care about their health,” the president added.

The president reiterated that Belarus should recycle 50-60% of waste and increase usage of recycled materials. “Switzerland does not produce new glass but uses recycled glass,” the head of state noted. He added that Belarus cannot achieve the same result at once, but should step up efforts in this area.

Aleksandr Lukashenko instructed to take matters of separate waste collection and waste recycling under control and to report to him about the results. “Recycled materials and waste present a grave problem. We do not want to aggravate the situation as Russia has done. Russia is a big country but has nowhere to dump waste because people want to breathe clean air,” the president said.
