MINSK, 5 November (BelTA) – Belarus plans to save over 3 million tons of equivalent fuel, Deputy Chairman of the State Standardization Committee of Belarus, Director of the Energy Efficiency Department Vitaly Kretsky told journalists during the conference on improving energy efficiency of the Belarusian economy, BelTA has learned.
The implementation of the state program Energy Saving for 2021-2025 is concluding this year. “The measures and tasks we planned to accomplish by the end of the five-year period will be fulfilled. We expect to reduce the GDP energy intensity by 5% compared to the 2020 level by the end of the period. By the end of 2024, we had reduced it by 2.8%. We also plan to fully complete the task set by both the government and the head of state – to maximize the involvement of domestic energy resources into the national energy balance. These are woodchips and peat. This indicator is expected to reach 17% by the end of 2025, although the target was 16%. We plan to slightly exceed the target, which became possible thanks to the construction of new heating plants and the conversion of existing energy sources using imported fuels to local types of energy resources. By the end of the five-year period, the total number of converted or newly built energy sources will be about 70 facilities. A new state program has been approved, under which this work will continue,” Vitaly Kretsky said.
According to him, the task is to achieve savings of more than 3 million tons of equivalent fuel. “This has become possible because our economic entities are committed to the rational use of energy resources and improving the efficiency of their use. This ultimately leads to a reduction in the cost of manufactured products and an increase in their competitiveness,” Vitaly Kretsky said. “By the end of the year, we also plan to reach 7.1% use of renewable energy sources. For the next five-year period, our plan is to reach 7.3%. Gross energy consumption will grow, and along with it, we will increase the share of renewable energy, including by building up all capacities.”
Given the current geopolitical situation, the vector of cooperation is directed eastward, the department head noted. “We work well with Russian and Chinese colleagues. It is no secret that Belarus is a leader in the post-Soviet space in terms of implemented energy efficiency measures. We started working on this since gaining independence. And today, many countries are studying our legislative framework and the projects we have implemented. For our part, we are initiating the creation of an international energy efficiency fund on the SCO platform, so that investments can be directed there for the implementation of energy efficiency projects in our countries,” Vitaly Kretsky added.
He is confident that it is now “necessary to focus on technology.” “Concurrently with the increase in fuel use efficiency, the quality of manufactured products also improves. For example, the Minsk Margarine Plant cut its unit costs by 38% via modernization, while Gomselmash reduced specific costs for agricultural machinery output by about 20% by optimizing painting processes. It leads to increasing both the prosperity and the quality of life of our citizens, including by containing tariffs or reducing the cost of produced fuel and energy,” he emphasized.
The Improving Energy Efficiency of Belarusian Economy practical conference serves as a platform for substantive dialogue, experience exchange, and the development of practical solutions aimed at strengthening energy independence, efficiency, and economic sustainability. Furthermore, the winners of the 11th national competition in energy efficiency, resource saving, and environmental friendliness Leader of Energy Efficiency of Belarus will be awarded there.
