Belarus, Oman discuss priority areas in economic cooperation

MINSK, 21 March (BelTA) – Priority areas of trade and economic cooperation between Belarus and Oman were discussed during the visit of Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei to Oman on 20-21 March, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Vladimir Makei held talks with Oman Vice Premier for Relations and International Cooperation Affairs Sayyid Asaad bin Tariq al-Said. The Belarusian official handed over the letter of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko addressed to Sultan of Oman Qaboos bin Said with the assessment of the current state and prospects of the Belarusian-Omani relations.

The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need to promptly form an intergovernmental mechanism of cooperation between Belarus and Oman in the format of a joint committee and sign the corresponding bilateral agreement. The Vice Premier said that Oman will undertake necessary steps in the near future.

Vladimir Makei met with Yusuf bin Alawi, the Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman, to talk over bilateral relations in the political, economic and investment areas, and also education, science and culture.

The meetings with Minister of Commerce and Industry Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy and Chairman of the Board of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry Khalil bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Khonji took stock of the progress made in the implementation of the agreements reached during the visit of the delegation of Omani businessmen and investors to Minsk in September 2016 and highlighted the priority areas in the bilateral trade and economic cooperation. The parties mentioned agriculture, industrial cooperation, information technology, and tourism as the most promising areas for interaction.

Belarus’ economic potential was presented at the meeting between Vladimir Makei and Omani businessmen. Omani businessmen were invited to take part in the implementation of investment projects in Belarus.

The parties reached an agreement to exchange delegations of Belarusian and Omani experts to decide on the projects and programs of mutual interest.

The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs held meetings with Chairman of the Council of State of the Sultanate of Oman Yahya bin Mahfoudh al-Mantheri and Chairman of the Consultative Assembly of Oman Khalid Al Mawali to discuss ways of expanding Belarus-Oman parliamentary ties and strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation in the international arena. The parties emphasized the importance of involving Oman MPs in the implementation of bilateral economic projects and providing political support to the process.

While in Oman, the Belarusian delegation took part in the opening ceremony of the Office of the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Belarus to the Sultanate of Oman. The event was attended by Oman’s high-ranking officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps and businessmen. “The appointment of well-known businessman Qais Al Yousef as Belarusian Honorary Consul to Oman will play an important role in the intensification of bilateral political, trade, economic, investment and business ties,” representatives of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Belarusian Ministry of Sports and Tourism and the Oman Ministry of Tourism during the meeting with Oman Minister of Tourism Ahmed bin Nasser Al Mahrizi.
