Belarus-made goods in import substitution center in Saint Petersburg

MINSK, 6 July (BelTA) – Plans have been made to allocate space for Belarus-made goods in the import substitution center in Saint Petersburg, BelTA learned from Sergei Movchan, Saint Petersburg Vice Governor, during the eighth session of the Belarus-Saint Petersburg Business Cooperation Council on 6 July. The session took place at premises of OAO Baranovichi Cotton Production Amalgamation (Blakit trademark).

According to Sergei Movchan, they intend to use premises of the former exhibition center Lenexpo to open an import substitution center. The city administration has already decided in favor of allocating the relevant space to Belarusian manufacturers.

Sergei Movchan stressed that relations with Belarus have been and will be high on the list of priorities in the Saint Petersburg government’s foreign economic policy and international activities. Belarus is the top CIS trader in terms of trade turnover with Saint Petersburg. In 2014 Belarus-Saint Petersburg trade rose by 3% to $1.9 billion to place Belarus in the ninth position among Saint Petersburg’s trade partners.

Among positive examples of cooperation the Saint Petersburg Vice Governor mentioned the successful implementation of investment projects by the Detskoselsky concern in Belarus with a view to creating the physical infrastructure to process and make agricultural products for the sake of shipping them to Saint Petersburg. Within five months of the year the agricultural enterprise Detskoselsky Gorodok made RUB102.5 million worth of merchandise or 140.5% as against the same period of last year, stated Sergei Movchan. The program for research and development cooperation between higher education establishments develops as well as interaction between the Belarusian electronics company OAO Integral and the cluster for making medical and ecological instruments and biotechnologies in Saint Petersburg.

The Saint Petersburg Vice Governor emphasized the high level of interaction between the administrations of Saint Petersburg districts and cities and regions of Belarus as well as interaction within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia.

“We would like to invite Belarusian partners to participate in the construction of a logistics center for agricultural products in Saint Petersburg. It is a huge undertaking that will produce a very good effect,” noted Sergei Movchan.
