Belarus-Karelia trade up 1.6 times in Q1 2023

Belarus-Karelia trade up 1.6 times in Q1 2023

MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) - The trade between Belarus and Russia’s Karelia increased by 1.6 times in the first quarter of 2023 to exceed $27 million, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said as he met with Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov on 24 May, BelTA has learned.

“This year's trade between Belarus and Karelia amounted to over $27 million in the first quarter and increased 1.6 times compared to the same period last year. The figures are not bad. Our trade and economic relations have a certain dependence on a number of large commodity positions,” Roman Golovchenko said.

Belarus’ main exports to Karelia include supplies of pulpwood and cargo automotive equipment. “In Belarus’ imports from Karelia two items are also dominant - fresh and chilled fish, as well as ore materials including pebbles, gravel, and crushed stone. Although new items have also been added to the list. In particular, in January-March 2023, we bought almost $2 million worth of medical products from Karelia,” he said.

“Our specialists, first of all, need to work on diversifying the product range in trade, and there is a very large reserve for this. In this regard I would like to mention the work of the working group on development of bilateral cooperation. Such a mechanism has proven its effectiveness. It helps us find new points of growth and monitor the implementation of current projects,” the prime minister said.
