Belarus, Iran plan to set up BelAZ assembly facility

MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) – Belarus and Iran are discussing the project to assemble BelAZ dump trucks in Iran, Belarus’ Industry Minister Vitaly Vovk told reporters after a session of the Belarusian-Iranian commission for economic cooperation, BelTA has learned.

Iran already operates the facility of Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ trademark) which makes trucks and dump trucks. The project to start manufacturing buses is in the pipeline. “We are considering the BelAZ assembly project. Everything will depend on the market. The most important thing is to have customers,” Vitaly Vovk said.

The chairman of the Iranian part of the mixed commission, Iranian Minister of Industries, Mines and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh said that the roadmap for the development of cooperation between Belarus and Iran for 2016-2017 which was signed today should give an impetus to cooperation in various areas, including in industry. The deputy industry ministers will meet twice a year to review the progress on the agreements. “We hope that all the agreements reached today will be implemented before the end of 2017,” Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh said.

The parties are interested in developing closer cooperation. In addition, the parties agreed to increase the mutual trade manifold. In 2015 the mutual trade amounted to $70.2 million, and in January-March 2016 it made up $6.4 million.

Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh assured that the Iranian side is interested in the arrival of investors in its mining industry. He stressed that there are no restrictions on foreign investment. The country regularly conducts tenders for the sale of assets in the mining sector.

In addition to the roadmap, the parties also signed a working program on cooperation in the field of standardization and certification for 2016-2017.
