Belarus interested in industrial cooperation with Georgia

MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) – Belarus is interested in expanding industrial cooperation with Georgia, Belarus’ Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said at an expanded-format meeting with his Georgian counterpart Giorgi Kvirikashvili on 22 March, BelTA has learned.

“We offer you industrial cooperation. The present-day conditions are favorable to take the bilateral mutual relations onto a higher level. One of the most important projects is the setting up of a plant to assemble Belarusian tractors,” noted Andrei Kobyakov. In his words, Belarus hopes that the implementation of the project will help supply Georgian farm producers with new highly-efficient equipment and promote the modernization of the agricultural sector.

Belarus is also ready to participate in the programs to renew lift equipment in Georgia. “We hope that the Georgian government will show interest in the implementation of the joint project to set up an assembly facility which is currently being implemented by OAO Mogilevliftmash,” said the Belarusian head of government.

According to Andrei Kobyakov, Belarus views Georgia as a promising trade and economic partner in the Caucasian region. “Our countries and people traditionally enjoy a high level of mutual relations, mutual understanding, friendship and trust,” he added.

Last year the two countries considerably intensified the bilateral political and economic relations. A serious impetus to this process was given by the visit of the President of Belarus to Tbilisi and Batumi in April 2015. “I hope that with joint efforts we will be able to reach the goals we have set, including in raising the mutual trade to $200 million within the next year or two,” noted Andrei Kobyakov.

He expressed confidence that the opening of the Belarusian diplomatic representation in Georgia will also promote an increase in the bilateral trade. “The Belarusian government has already adopted the corresponding decision (on opening the diplomatic representation - BelTA),” said Andrei Kobyakov.

In his words, the trade between the two countries totaled almost $45 million last year. “These figures are not big, but the positive fact is that we were able to balance our trade: exports and imports correspond to each other. This proves we are partners who need each other,” the Belarusian head of government said.
