Belarus considers project to co-develop 1.5m ha agricultural lands in Egypt

MINSK, 21 July (BelTA) – A Belarusian delegation led by Belarusian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Marinich explored the prospects for co-implementing a project to develop 1.5 million hectares of agricultural land in Egypt during a visit to the country, BelTA learned from the website of the Belarusian embassy in Egypt.

“Belarus explored the prospects for participating in the project to develop 1.5 million hectares of agricultural land, boosting the supplies of Belarus’ agricultural equipment and grain drying facilities, and also opening maintenance centers in Egypt’s regions,” the embassy noted.

During the visit, the Belarusian delegation met with top officials and representatives of several Egyptian government bodies, among them the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trading, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, the Ministry of Local Development, and other authorities.

“The sides continued discussing the details and mechanisms of the implementation of joint projects to build greenhouse facilities, dairy and meat plants, and drill water wells. They reviewed the status of implementation of valid contracts and the prospects for signing new ones to export Belarus’ food products to Egypt. The sides also reached agreed to intensify scientific cooperation in food production,” the embassy said.

A representative of the Development Bank of Belarus met with the leadership of Banque Misr and the Agricultural Bank of Egypt. They exchanged views on the prospects for cooperation in interbank lending and financial assistance to Belarus’ exports. A representative of the Main Department for Antimonopoly Regulation at the Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade Ministry held negotiations with top officials of the Egyptian Competition Authority and harmonized a draft memorandum of mutual understanding.

As a result of the meetings, the sides signed a protocol of negotiations that reflects the steps towards developing cooperation in the short term.
