Belarus considering buying sea terminal to transship nitrogen fertilizers

MINSK, 27 May (BelTA) – Belarus will consider buying a terminal in a sea port for the sake of transshipping nitrogen fertilizers after the project to build a nitrogen plant in the Belarusian chemical company OAO Grodno Azot is completed. The statement was made by Igor Bobyr, Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian state petrochemical concern Belneftekhim, at the press conference held on 27 May, BelTA has learned. The press conference was timed to Chemical Industry Worker’s Day.

The official said they will consider buying the terminal for transshipping nitrogen fertilizers after the nitrogen complex is built. Effective operation requires steady export volumes, Igor Bobyr remarked. “It can be done after the project is implemented. Then we will be able to think about ports, Baltic ones first of all,” said Belneftekhim’s deputy head.

In his words, more than half of the output of nitrogen fertilizers is consumed on the home market.

BelTA reported earlier that OAO Grodno Azot intends to build a nitrogen complex, with investments expected to reach $1.2 billion. The complex will include an ammonia shop with the output capacity of 875,000 tonnes per annum, a carbamide shop (1,190,000 tonnes per annum), and the main hydrogen plant (200 million m3 per annum). The construction of the nitrogen complex is scheduled for completion in 2017.
