Belarus, Austria to cooperate in waste treatment, biodiversity protection

MINSK, 23 September (BelTA) – Belarus and Austria are set to cooperate in waste treatment and biodiversity protection, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

“Vienna hosted a meeting of the Belarusian-Austrian working group on environmental protection and nature conservation technologies. The meeting discussed matters related to our cooperation in waste treatment, ecolabeling, protection of biological and landscape diversity, and green economy,” the ministry said.

Belarusian specialists were briefed about the Austrian Smart City concept. “Vienna’s approach to smart city construction is based on cost-effective use of resources aimed at reducing CO2 emissions. It also envisages further improvement of the living standards and social engagement. The implementation of the concept will help us introduce innovation-based changes and, if necessary, develop new forms of public and private services,” the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection said.

The Belarusian delegation visited the Pfaffenau waste incineration plant and its logistics center that prepares residual and bulky waste for thermal treatment.

At the end of the visit, the Belarusian and Austrian officials agreed to draft and adopt a final protocol of the meeting. They expressed mutual eagerness to intensify the direct ties between the ministries and to facilitate the establishment of a mutually beneficial partnership between Belarusian and Austrian companies working with environmental conservation technologies.
