Belarus aims to harvest 9m grain in 2018

MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – Belarus plans to harvest at least 9 million tonnes of grain this year, Belarus’ Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Vladimir Grakun told the media on 1 March, BelTA has learned.

“We are planning to harvest at least 9 million tonnes of grain, 1.2 million tonnes of potato, about 5 million tonnes of sugar beet, and 780,000 tonnes of colza. We have set the harvest targets for every agricultural crop,” the deputy minister said.

According to Vladimir Grakun, currently the farmers’ focus is on fertilizers. “As of today the storage volumes are higher than the ones produced in 2017, including nitrogen, phosphate and potash fertilizers,” he added.

The deputy minister also noted that the country will continue working on the diversification of export, including that of crop products. “Any state seeks to be self-sufficient in crop products and to have a surplus to sell. Our main export items are potatoes, vegetables and fruit,” Vladimir Grakun noted.
