Opinion: Only a consolidated Belarusian society can overcome challenges and cataclysms

MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) – Only the consolidation of the Belarusian society will allow overcoming challenges and cataclysms. Piotr Petrovsky, an expert with the Belarusian public association Belaya Rus, made the statement as he commented on Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko’s decision to declare 2021 the Year of People’s Unity, BelTA has learned.

Piotr Petrovsky said: “Nowadays in the period of the global coronavirus crisis, the pandemic, the aggravated political struggle, struggle for resources and technologies it is important for Belarus and the Belarusian society to consolidate forces for the sake of overcoming these global challenges and cataclysms and recovering from the world crisis as a stronger nation that has acquired new technologies and technological chains, target markets, a nation, which international standing grows. Particularly considering the domestic political destructive events of 2020, which placed in question Belarus’ sovereignty and independence. In this regard both the Belarusian People’s Congress and the campaign to elect members of municipal councils of deputies should become mechanisms and tools to consolidate the Belarusian society, enable new conditions for the political development of the country on the basis of continuity of the policy and the entire state system.”

Piotr Petrovsky stressed that everyone needs to understand that the Belarusian nation has no right to sell its country for a promise of foreign pies. “We have the experience of nationwide resistance against the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. Today we should as fundamentally, as properly rally around the Belarusian state, around the truly common interests. It is important primarily for the sake of survival of the Belarusian state and the nation, for the sake of protecting sovereignty and independence, for the sake of our honorable standing among nations as [the Belarusian poet and writer] Yanka Kupala once said,” he noted.

On 4 January Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko signed decree No.1 on declaring the year 2021 the Year of People’s Unity. The decision was made for the sake of consolidating the society, rallying the Belarusian nation on the basis of ideas of the country’s sovereignty and independence.

In line with the presidential decree the Council of Ministers will work together with the oblast administrations and the Minsk City Executive Committee in order to put together and approve an action plan on organizing the Year of People’s Unity. The Council of Ministers will also have to ensure the coordinated work of government agencies and other organizations in the course of carrying out this action plan.
