Portuguese communist: Belarusians have defended their economy and invested in development

MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – Belarusians have managed to protect their industry and agriculture, and have successfully invested in the country’s development. Head of the International Department of the Portuguese Communist Party (Member of the European Parliament in 2005-2009) Pedro Miguel Neves Guerreiro shared this opinion with reporters before a meeting in the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“We support and deeply appreciate the desire of the Republic of Belarus for sovereignty. For decades, no one has been able to make your country step away from the road that Belarus is following. This is clearly visible in such spheres as healthcare and education. You have managed to protect your production system, agriculture, and industry very well. You have not only protected them, but also developed them. You have invested in the development of your country. This is very good for your people,” Pedro Miguel Neves Guerreiro stated.

He emphasized that every nation in the world has the right to development, and no one should be dependent – economically or politically.

Speaking about joint projects with the Belarusian side, the representative of the Portuguese Communist Party pointed out that these projects exist and involve various spheres, including economic and political interaction. But in order to plan new projects, it is necessary to meet more often and work in the field of industrial cooperation, he believes.

Pedro Miguel Neves Guerreiro remarked upon good relations with Belarus at the level of political parties and parliamentarians. The current meeting in Minsk is not the first one. Bilateral meetings were held earlier, and relations are maintained.

“Our main goal is to learn as best as possible what economic and social development the country is experiencing today. It is very important that the Portuguese people learn the true situation that exists in the Republic of Belarus and gain as much knowledge as possible about the Belarusian people as a whole,” he is convinced.

The representative of the Portuguese Communist Party said he believes that, taking into account the situation in Europe and in the world, it is important to stand together and be able to withstand modern challenges. It is also necessary to promote initiatives aimed primarily at peace and prosperity of nations in order to counter contradictions. It is with these positive intentions that the delegation from Portugal is staying in Minsk.

“We really want to contribute something good to this path – the path of creation. We believe this is important for both the Portuguese and Belarusian peoples, and for the world as a whole,” Pedro Miguel Neves Guerreiro said.
