Lukashenko points out shortcomings in Zhirovichi improvement

SLONIM DISTRICT, 19 September (BelTA) – During the visit the Holy Dormition Stavropegic Monastery located in the agro-town of Zhirovichi, Slonim District, Grodno Oblast, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko drew the attention of responsible officials to the shortcomings in the improvement and landscaping of the monastery, BelTA has learned.

“Some of the elements around the monastery indicate that certain things have been done in a hurry, only recently, and in a military way, just to report in ‘Karayev-style’ [a reference to Grodno Oblast Governor Yuri Karayev, who has a military background]. Not everything has been completed yet, far from it. Remember: this monastery is a gem of Orthodoxy. There must not leave a single neglected corner here. We must create the perfect place here for believers,” the Belarusian leader stressed. “In the spring you will have your ‘final exam’ here. Everywhere, including in the agro-town of Zhirovichi, everything must be perfect. This is exactly how I set the task [previously]."

The head of state, in particular, mentioned the land reclamation work carried out around Zhirovichi. “In the spring we will see how you plant these plots and how you put in order the things I pointed out, such as that park, which still looks like a swamp,” he warned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also emphasized that it is not necessary to thoughtlessly include certain projects in state programs, but instead to seek funding from other sources for what truly needs to be done.

As BelTA previously reported, during another visit to the Zhirovichi Monastery in June 2021, the president instructed that within four years, the improvement work should be completed not only for the monastery and its grounds but also for the agro-town itself. “Zhirovichi is an agro-town. The monastery and the church are part of this agro-town. Everything must be brought into perfect condition. It should be a true gem. I promise you that we will allocate necessary funds according to the needs. But everything must be done in a cost-effective manner,” he said.
