BIALYSTOK, 29 July (BelTA) - The Belarusian state pursues a balanced policy towards ethnic minorities, chairman of the coordinating council of heads of public associations of Russian compatriots at the Russian Embassy in Belarus, chairman of the public association Rus Ivan Korda said in a meeting between heads of national and cultural organizations of Belarus and Poland on 27 July, BelTA has learnt.
Ivan Korda noted that after the break-up of the Soviet Union Belarus managed to avoid the radicalization of the society in terms of confessional and national differences. “Everything has resumed its natural course and now these issues are addressed with the use of evolutionary means. The state is conducting a very balanced ethnic and confessional policy which allows all peoples and ethnic groups resolve their culturological and national problems bearing in mind that first and foremost they are the Belarusian citizens,” Ivan Korda said.
Such situation helps maintain stability in the society, fosters the integration, which can be proved by the results of the census. In 1989 there were 1,150,000 Russians in Belarus while the 2009 census showed that their number fell to 750,000, which is almost a 30% decrease. According to Ivan Korda, people’s tendency to reckon themselves among the indigenous nation is quite natural taking into account the formation of the Union State.
Touching upon the activities of the Russian diaspora in Belarus, Ivan Korda noted that they are carried out in accordance with the Belarusian law and in line with the joint projects which are being implemented in the Union State. “We are working to uphold the common integration, information, cultural and historic space of our two peoples,” Ivan Korda underlined.
