FM in favor of dialogue between Belarus, Lithuania

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei stressed the need for dialogue between Belarus and Lithuania as he met with representatives of the Lithuanian civil society in Minsk on 18 January, BelTA has learned.

According to the minister, despite the divergence of views, there are clear general principles to guide by in relations between countries. Belarus and Lithuania have lived in one and the same states for a long time. The two countries share history, have much in common and it is important not to lose it.

"The fact that you have come to visit us is a good sign, a good signal. This suggests that there is a certain part of Lithuanian society that understands neighbors need dialogue," the minister stressed. According to Vladimir Makei, this principle has always been the basis of the state foreign policy.

“Our relations have not always been cloudless. We have had our ups and downs. This is also true about our history. We, however, believe that this is not the reason to suspend or terminate contracts,” the minister said.

Vladimir Makei stressed that Belarus is interested in good relations with Lithuania. In the past years, the interstate cooperation had been developing steadily, the parties exchanged mutual visits and addressed any problems that arose. “We are interested in such a progressive development in the future,” the minister said.
