In the upcoming five-year period, particular attention will be paid to demographic security, said Yelena Nefedova, a delegate to the VII Belarusian People’s Congress from the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, Chair of the Vitebsk Oblast Trade Union Association, and a deputy of the Vitebsk Oblast Council of Deputies.
“Trade unions play an active role in shaping and implementing the state’s socially oriented policy,” Yelena Nefedova noted.
Having reviewed the draft of Belarus’ socio-economic development program for 2026-2030, she pointed out that part of the document is devoted to demographic security – and rightly so. “Belarus today, like a number of other countries, is facing certain demographic challenges: an aging population and declining birth rates. This ultimately affects the labor market,” Yelena Nefedova emphasized.
As a delegate to the Belarusian People’s Congress, she has the opportunity to raise issues within labor collectives and bring them to the attention of the Congress. She regularly meets with employees of private enterprises. “Business today must be socially responsible, and our president emphasizes this. When we visit labor collectives, we inform workers about the possibility and even the necessity of taking an active civic position,” the delegate said.
She added that it is important to follow the strategy outlined by the head of state: strong regions mean a strong country. “For regions to be strong, young people must be able to settle there, have opportunities to work and earn a living, and have access to affordable rental housing. This is reflected in the draft socio-economic development program for the next five-year period. It is about ensuring the social and economic protection of our people,” Yelena Nefedova said.
