Analyst: Belarus proves agriculture can be an economic driver

MINSK, 13 September (BelTA) - Belarus has proved that agriculture can serve as a driver of economic development, economic analyst Yulia Abukhovich said in a recent episode in BelTA’s V teme [On Point] project.

The expert noted that Belarus’ agro-industrial complex has demonstrated significant success year after year. In support of her words, she pointed out that last year agricultural exports exceeded $10 billion, a record figure. The Agriculture and Food Ministry does not rule out that this year’s results will surpass that figure as well. Thus, Belarus not only fully supplies its domestic market with food but also earns substantial money from agricultural exports. “We have proved that agriculture can be a serious driver of economic development. This will continue in the future,” Yulia Abukhovich is convinced.

She also drew attention to the support the state provides for the development of the agricultural sector. This concerns the provision of various types of benefits, assistance with the purchase of mineral fertilizers, fuel, machinery and other necessary means. At the same time, as the head of state has noted, serious thought must be given to when budget funds really need to be allocated and when there is no such need.

“As the president said, no one will give up subsidies. It may be targeted allocation of money, investment in development. The state can help with the purchase of machinery and resolve the issue of fertilizers. But heads of agricultural enterprises will have to root out mismanagement, strengthen technological discipline and demonstrate concrete results,” Yulia Abukhovich believes.
