Shymanovich, Volynets advance to doubles quarterfinals at WTA 125 tournament

MINSK, 10 July (BelTA) – Belarusian tennis player Iryna Shymanovich and American Katie Volynets have advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles event at the WTA 125 tournament in Newport, USA, which has a prize fund of $225,000, BelTA has learned.

In their opening match, they defeated the American duo Sydney Jara / Olivia Lincer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. For a place in the semifinals, Iryna Shymanovich and Katie Volynets will face the Indian pair Ankita Raina / Prarthana Thombare. In the singles draw, Iryna Shymanovich (world No. 215) won her first-round match against Japan’s Hayu Kinoshita (No. 227), 6-3, 6-2, but in the round of 16 she lost in a three-set battle to American Mary Stoiana (No. 130), 6-3, 2-6, 3-6.

The tournament in Newport will conclude on 12 July.
