Sasnovich advances to Brisbane round of 16

MINSK, 7 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich continues her winning run at the 2026 Brisbane International, which boasts a prize pool of $1.2 million, BelTA has learned.

In the second round, the Belarusian, ranked 113th in the world, confidently defeated Denmark’s world No. 14 Clara Tauson, 6-3, 6-3. In the round of 32, Sasnovich beat Russia’s world number 61 Anna Blinkova, 7-5, 6-1. In the third round, the Belarusian will face Russia’s world number 17 Liudmila Samsonova. Aliaksandra Sasnovich entered the main draw through qualifying, defeating Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova (No. 128), 6:2, 6:2, and Uzbekistan’s Maria Timofeeva (No. 138), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus crushed Spain’s world number 50 Cristina Bucsa, 6-0, 6-1, in the opener. In the match for a place in the quarterfinals, the Belarusian will face Romania’s Sorana Cirstea (No. 41). Last year, in the Brisbane International final, Sabalenka defeated Russian tennis player Polina Kudermetova. In the doubles opener of the current event, Aryna Sabalenka and Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa defeated the Russian-Chinese duo of Liudmila Samsonova and Zhang Shuai.

The Brisbane tournament will be over on 11 January.
