Sabalenka soars into third round in Toronto

MINSK, 5 August (BelTA) – Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka cruised through her opening match at the $7.4 million WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, BelTA has learned.

In the round of 64, the world number one dispatched Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima (world No.111) 6-3, 6-3. The encounter lasted 1 hour and 23 minutes. Sabalenka will next face China’s Zhang Shuai (No.62), who defeated Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia (No.29).

In 2025, Canada’s Victoria Mboko claimed the Toronto title after defeating Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the final. Aryna Sabalenka skipped the event in Canada in 2025 but reached the quarterfinals in 2024, where she fell to Amanda Anisimova of the United States. The final match of this year’s tournament is scheduled for 13 August.
