Sabalenka, Sinner top world tennis rankings

MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) - Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus failed to defend her championship title in Madrid, but she continues to confidently top the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, BelTA has learned.

After losing in the quarterfinals of the Madrid tournament, the world No. 1 lost around 1,000 ranking points and now has 10,110 points. Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, who sits in second place, has narrowed the gap to 1,555 points and also leads the Belarusian in the race to the WTA Finals. Poland’s Iga Świątek has moved up to third place. Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich dropped 11 spots to 120th place. Iryna Shymanovich is ranked 187th, while Victoria Azarenka, who has not played in official tournaments for a long time, sits in 215th place.This week, the top tennis players will compete at the Italian Open in Rome, with a prize pool of $6.9 million. Today, in the first qualifying round match, Aliaksandra Sasnovich will face Austria’s world number 121 Julia Grabher. Last year, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini won the clay-court event in the Italian capital, beating American Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-2 in the final.

At the top of the men’s rankings is Italy’s Jannik Sinner, the winner of the Mutua Madrid Open, with 14,350 points. Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz is second with 12,960 points, and Germany’s Alexander Zverev rounds out the top three with 5,805 points. Belarus’ top-ranked player Erik Arutiunian is in 581st place.
