Sabalenka and Rybakina meeting in Australian Open final for second time

MINSK 31 January (BelTA) – Melbourne is hosting the women’s final of the season’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, on 31 January, BelTA has learned.

In the deciding match, the world’s top-ranked player, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, is taking on Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, who is ranked fifth in the world. The match began at 11:30 Minsk time. In their 14 previous meetings, Sabalenka has won eight times. In the 2023 Australian Open final, Sabalenka defeated Rybakina in a three-set match. In 2024, Aryna Sabalenka also became champion by defeating China’s Qinwen Zheng, but last year she lost the title to American tennis player Madison Keys. For the 27-year-old Sabalenka, the upcoming final will be her eighth in Grand Slam tournaments, having won four of her previous seven. For the 26-year-old Rybakina who holds the 2022 Wimbledon championship title, this will be her third appearance at this level.

The men’s final will be held tomorrow, where world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will face ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who is currently ranked fourth. In yesterday’s semifinals, Alcaraz defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in a five-set match that lasted five and a half hours, while Djokovic also secured a five-set victory over the winner of the two previous Melbourne tournaments, Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
