MINSK, 26 March (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka has reached the Miami Open semifinals, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian defeated world number 45 Hailey Baptiste of the USA in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-4. The match lasted one hour and 20 minutes. Sabalenka’s next opponent will be Kazakhstan’s world number two Elena Rybakina, who in the first quarterfinal match defeated last year’s tournament runner-up, World No.5 Jessica Pegula of the USA. Earlier, Aryna Sabalenka saw off two American representatives: Ann Li (World No.39) 7-6, 6-4, and Caty McNally (72) 6-4, 6-2, as well as China’s Zheng Qinwen (26) 6-3, 6-4. In the second semifinal, World No.4 Coco Gauff of the USA will face Czech Karolína Muchová (14).
The winner of the current competition in Miami will be determined on 29 March; the champion will earn over $1.1 million and 1,000 ranking points. A year ago, Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula in the final match of the Miami Open with a score of 7-5, 6-2. Another Belarusian tennis player, Victoria Azarenka, won this tournament three times (2009, 2011, 2016).
