Over 122,000 large families live in Belarus

MINSK, 15 May (BelTA) – As 1 May 2023 there were 122,100 large families in Belarus bringing up almost 400,000 children, which means every fifth child in the country, BelTA learned from the Labor and Social Security Ministry.

Support for families with children is a national priority. Marriage, family, maternity, paternity and childhood are protected by the state. This is something that is enshrined in the Constitution of Belarus.

Families receive a family capital when a third or subsequent child is born or adopted. On 1 January 2023 it amounted to Br29,950. In 2023, Br430 million will be allocated in the national budget to provide family capital payments.

During the entire period of the program Belarusbank has opened almost 126,000 family capital deposits, which totaled $826 million and more than Br1 billion. As many as 4,000 accounts were opened in Q1 2023.

As of 1 May over 68,000 families applied for permission to use family capital ahead of schedule. Some 83% of them applied to use the money to improve housing conditions, 7% - to pay for education and 10% - to receive healthcare services.

On the whole, the national budget spending for social protection measures for families with children amount to over 3% of GDP annually. Social protection of families in Belarus is ensured through the provision of state benefits for the birth and upbringing of children, family capital at the birth of a third or subsequent child, targeted social assistance and social services, guarantees in employment, pension provision, housing and loan relations and other areas of family life.

Belarus marks Family Day on 15 May. A number of events are held across the country to celebrate family as an important social institution.
