MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) – Aleksandra Petrova, Deputy Head of the Main Department of Vocational Education and Head of the Department of Vocational and Secondary Specialized Education of the Belarusian Education Ministry, revealed how many foreign citizens study in Belarusian colleges in BelTA’s project “The Nation Speaks”.

According to her, about 2,000 foreign citizens study annually in the system of secondary specialized and vocational education. “But at the level of vocational and secondary specialized education, these are mainly our partner countries whose citizens enroll on general terms: for example, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan. These are students from countries that closely cooperate with us, conclude international agreements, and enroll under standard procedures. At the same time, there are also examples of students from African countries. We have also had Japanese students studying at the Choreographic Gymnasium-College. Our arts sector is highly valued internationally,” Aleksandra Petrova noted.

The relatively small number of foreign students in Belarusian colleges is explained by the fact that this level of education is oriented toward 15-year-old graduates of the 9th grade, and not everyone is ready to send a 15-year-old child abroad for education. “Colleges mainly compensate for work with foreign citizens through professional training. This means working with adults who receive vocational qualifications and certificates of professional training, retraining, or advanced training, naturally, on a paid basis and often in cooperation with our enterprises. In this area, we have quite a large number of foreign learners,” she added.
