Gerasimov reaches Sofia Open round of 16

MINSK, 29 September (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 112 needed two hours and 40 minutes to defeat Canada’s world number 68 Vasek Pospisil 5-7, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 to move to the Sofia Open round two, BelTA has learned.

In a match for a quarterfinal spot the Belarusian will face Italy’s world number 14 Jannik Sinner. The Belarusian had to go through the qualifying round to reach the main draw. Belarus’ world number 45 Ilya Ivashka will take on world number 92 Pablo Andujar of Spain in the opener.

Belarus’ world number 34 Victoria Azarenka scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over world number 49 Zhang Shuai of China in just 61 minutes to move to the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic second round. The Belarusian will next play world number 174 Hailey Baptiste of the United States. Belarus’ world number 106 Aliaksandra Sasnovich registered a victory against world number 48 Madison Keys of the United States in the opener. In the second round Aliaksandra Sasnovich will face Kazakhstan’s world number 17 Elena Rybakina. World number 136 Olga Govortsova of Belarus lost 2-6, 2-6 to Germany’s Andrea Petkovic (World No.64). In the doubles round of Last 16 Olga Govortsova and Quinn Gleason of the United States lost to Ukraine’s duo Lyudmyla Kichenok and Marta Kostyuk, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 9-11.
