Gancharenko named new head coach of Belarus’ national football team

MINSK, 6 January (BelTA) - Viktor Gancharenko has become the new head coach of the Belarusian national football team. The Belarusian specialist replaces Spanish specialist Carlos Alos, who coached the team from August 2023 to December 2025, BelTA has learned.

The contract with the 48-year-old Viktor Gancharenko was signed at the Minsk Football House today. As a player, Viktor Gancharenko represented FC BATE Borisov and began his coaching career there in 2004. From 2007 to 2013, Viktor Gancharenko served as head coach of the Borisov-based club. Under his leadership, FC BATE won the Belarusian championship six times and, for the first time, advanced to the UEFA Champions League group stage, also reaching the UEFA Europa League round of 32. In continental competitions, Viktor Gancharenko’s teams defeated renowned clubs such as Bayern Munich, Arsenal London, and others. After leaving BATE, Gancharenko led Russian clubs - CSKA, Kuban, Ural, Krasnodar, Ufa, and Pari Nizhny Novgorod, which he departed in June 2025.

In the autumn of 2026, the Belarusian national team will compete in the next season of the UEFA Nations League. Viktor Gancharenko’s side will play in the tournament’s third-tier division - League C. The group stage draw for the Nations League will take place on 12 February, with matches scheduled from 24 September to 17 November.

Chairman of the Belarusian Football Federation Yevgeni Buloichik thanked the outgoing coaching staff of the national team, stating that the federation’s relationship with Carlos Alos was positive and that the parting was amicable.
