Film about Belarusian people’s genocide during WWII screened in Belgium

MINSK, 24 April (BelTA) - The Belarusian Embassy in Belgium hosted a screening of the documentary film Death Camps, which explores the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War, the Belarusian diplomatic mission in Belgium told BelTA.

Attending the event were leaders and staff of diplomatic missions, representatives of Belgian business community and federal government agencies, members of the European Parliament and the Belarusian diaspora.

The representatives of the Belarusian embassy delivered a welcome speech, emphasizing the contribution of the Belarusian people, the peoples of the former USSR, Europe, Asia, and America to the common victory over Nazism and militarism. They noted that nowadays certain countries are attempting to rewrite the history of World War II, erase the memory of Nazi atrocities and diminish the role of the peoples of the former Soviet Union in the Victory.

During the event, the Belarusian embassy’s representatives drew attention to the facts about the genocide of the Belarusian people during the war, based on materials from the investigation by the General Prosecutor's Office of Belarus. It was highlighted that Belarus is a peaceful, multi-confessional country that has never threatened its neighbors and consistently advocates for the peaceful resolution of current conflicts. However, there is a growing trend of destructive rhetoric from certain actors toward sovereign states seeking their own path of development, as well as unjustified militarization by the EU and NATO member states bordering Belarus.

The event emphasized that the truth about these horrific events serves as a reliable shield against the spread of chaos, ideas of superiority, extreme nationalism and the potential repetition of this terrible tragedy of the 20th century.
