MINSK, 25 July (BelTA) – Mikita Zhigar has set a new Belarusian 200m record, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Athletics Federation.

Competing at the Belarusian Open Athletics Championships, the 22-year-old sprinter claimed gold in the 200m event clocking 20.40 seconds. Mikita Zhigar's performance surpassed the previous national record of 20.63 seconds set by Aleksandr Starovoitov in 1988.

“I'm super happy. I've been working toward this all summer, coming close but not quite achieving it until now. After making a mistake in yesterday's 100m race, I was determined to show my absolute best today,” Mikita Zhigar said following his record-breaking performance. “I want to thank my family and also the coaches for their constant support – they have been like second parents to me throughout this journey.”
