Belarusian Aliaksei Talai sets Paralympic swimming record in Tokyo

MINSK, 30 August (BelTA) – Belarusian swimmer Aliaksei Talai set a Paralympic record in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke SB-1 but placed seventh in the final, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian improved the world record which was in place since 1992. First, Aliaksei Talai clocked 1:24.86 in the preliminary heat and improved it in the final to 1:23.16. However, he was overtaken by rivals competing in SB-2 who won medals in this program.

In Tokyo Belarusian athletes are competing in five sports and have already bagged seven medals. Swimmer Ihar Boki has clinched five gold medals. Yahor Shchalkanau won silver (swimming) and  Lizaveta Piatrenka took bronze (javelin throw).
