MINSK, 17 January (BelTA) - The Jewish community in Belarus traditionally organizes memorial events, mourning rallies, exhibitions and film screenings, lectures and other events to mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day (27 January), to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive and involve Jewish and non-Jewish audiences in the process, BelTA learned from the organizers.

This year the Union of Belarusian Jewish Public Associations and Communities plans to organize a series of events throughout Belarus. On 17 January Minsk will host a screening of a film about the Jewish resistance. A similar event will take place in Vitebsk on 25 January. An exhibition celebrating Raoul Wallenberg will be held in Slutsk, Soligorsk and Bobruisk.

Commemoration ceremonies will be organized by Jewish communities across Belarus on 25-27 January. On 25 January, an educational seminar about the Minsk ghetto is set to take place at Minsk school No. 137. A traditional memorial event in Minsk on 26 January will feature former ghetto prisoners.

Plans are in place for an exhibition in the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War to mark the Holocaust Remembrance Day. The program will be wrapped up with a ceremony to award the Righteous Among the Nations in Vitebsk on 27 January.

Every year the Union of Belarusian Jewish Public Associations and Communities acts as an organizer and partner of events to mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day established by the UN General Assembly on 1 November 2005. The date of 27 January was not chosen randomly: the Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp.
