Belarus to join Earth Hour 2023 on 25 March

Belarus to join Earth Hour 2023 on 25 March

MINSK, 24 March (BelTA) - Belarus plans to join one of the world's largest grassroots movements for the environment Earth Hour on 25 March 2023, head of the department for the control over the protection and use of lands, forests, fauna and flora of Minsk City Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Tatiana Shemenkova told BelTA.

The Minsk City Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection invites everyone to take part in the traditional movement for the environment Earth Hour on Saturday, 25 March. “Everyone can join the action simply by turning off lights and electrical appliances for one hour from 20.30 to 21.30. The campaign is not just about saving electricity. The main goal is to raise awareness of climate change, promote a responsible attitude towards nature and resources of the planet,” Tatiana Shemenkova said.

The Republic of Belarus will join the action for the 15th time. The Belarusian capital alone will switch off the lights on its iconic facilities such as the National Library, the Belarusian State Circus, the Bolshoi Theater of Belarus, the Dinamo Stadium, Galleria Minsk shopping center, the Minsk Arena sports complex and others. “It is easy to turn off lights and electrical appliances for one hour, but it shows everyone's willingness to change their daily habits for the good of our planet,” she said.

The event was first held in Sydney, Australia, on 31 March 2007. A year later 35 countries and more than 400 cities supported the campaign. Belarus joined the event in 2009.
