Belarus President’s Team draw with Brest Oblast Team in RHL match

MINSK, 27 December (BelTA) - The Belarus President’s Team drew with Brest Oblast Team, 5-5 (2-1, 1-2, 2-2), in the Republican Hockey League (RHL) second match at the Olympic Arena in Minsk on 27 December, BelTA has learned.

The game began quite unexpectedly, as the visiting team pulled ahead after a shot by Viktor Vusik just 5 minutes into the match. The reigning RHL champions kept their composure, and soon their captain, Oleg Antonenko, leveled the score. Shortly before the first intermission, Nikita Drozdov, following a precise pass from Nikolai Lukashenko, put the home team in front - 2-1. The second period had barely begun when Yaroslav Chupris scored for the third time, extending the lead. However, the teams went into the second intermission tied again as Aleksandr Burmistronok and Sergei Ploskov found the net for the Brest side. In the final stanza, both teams fought for victory with all their might. First, Aleksandr Korotkevich put the visitors ahead once again, then Artyom Antonenko equalized. With seven minutes left in the third period, Nikolai Mironchik netted the fifth goal against the President’s team, putting the guests on the verge of victory. But they couldn’t hold the lead as literally three-tenths of a second before the final hotter Nikolai Lukashenko scored to set the final score at 5-5 and was named the home team’s best player. For the Brest side, the best player was goaltender Vadim Boiko.

After two matches in the new season, the President’s team has earned three points, having confidently outplayed their opponents from Mogilev Oblast 9-3 in their first game. The team from Gomel Oblast tops the tournament table with six points after four games.

Last season, the President’s team won the event for the 16th time, defeating the team from Minsk Oblast in the finals. The teams from Gomel Oblast and Minsk Oblast each have one title.

The amateur ice hockey tournament is organized by the Presidential Sports Club, the Sport and Tourism Ministry, and the Minsk City Hall.
