MINSK, 28 May (BelTA) - Belarusian gymnast Kira Babkevich won Belarus’ first medal at the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Varna, Bulgaria, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian athlete claimed gold in the junior ball exercise. Kira Babkevich topped the qualification standings among 40 gymnasts in the discipline and also delivered the best performance in the final, scoring 25.900 points. Germany’s Melissa Dietz finished one tenth of a point behind, Ukraine’s Varvara Chubarova placed third, trailing by 0.2 points.
In 2025 Kira Babkevich finished fourth in the ball exercise at the Junior World Championships. On 27 May, the Belarusian gymnast also competed in the clubs final, finishing fourth, just 0.150 points short of bronze. Kira Babkevich, with Margarita Zhurovich and Kseniya Bandarenka, placed sixth in the team competition.
On 29 May, all finalists in the all-around and apparatus events among seniors will be determined in Varna, Belarus represented by Alina Harnosko, Darya Verenich and Nicole Leuta. Medals in the individual and group competitions will be awarded on 30-31 May.
The tournament in Bulgaria marks the first major competition in four years where Belarusian rhythmic gymnasts are competing under national symbols. The 2021 European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships also took place in Varna. Belarus won six medals: two silver and four bronze.
