MINSK, 29 July (BelTA) - Stone foundation elements of a 17th-century church (first half) were discovered in Budslav, Myadel District, BelTA learned from the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The Institute of History is involved in the comprehensive restoration project of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Budslav (National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Budslav) which is poised to become a major Roman Catholic religious center in Belarus.

Archaeological excavations are currently underway at a 17th-century architectural and historical monument in Myadel. The specialist unearthed structural elements, or more specifically, the stone foundations of the original stone church built in the first half of the 17th century.

"These foundations are partially incorporated into the new church structure (particularly the apse), though most of the original building and its babinets remained outside the new construction. The dimensions measured approximately 26 by 13 meters. It had a tiled roof and ochre-painted walls. There was a crypt beneath the church," the Institute of History said.
