MINSK, 25 September (BelTA) – About 50% of researchers at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus are women, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Karanik said during the first forum of women scientists, “The Role of Women in Science and Education,” BelTA reports.

“Women make a substantial contribution to science. Women make up roughly half of researchers at the National Academy of Sciences. In many fields, we can already confidently say that Belarusian science has a female face. These are the humanities, such as literature, culture and art, and the biological sciences, including biotechnology and medicine. The number of women is also growing every year in fields that were once considered male-dominated, namely physics and mathematics, and physics and technology. There, women already account for about 30% of researchers. The country has created all the conditions for Belarusian women to fully realize their enormous potential in any sphere, whether science, medicine, education or mechanical engineering,” Vladimir Karanik emphasized.

Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology Denis Korzhitsky in turn noted that the achievements of Belarusian science across all sectors are largely the result of the work of women scientists. “In the medical sciences, more than 60% of researchers are women. Behind the dry statistics lie hard work, dedication, and devotion to the homeland. I would like to see this forum, with its warm and welcoming spirit, enable women scientists to forge professional connections, grow their expertise, and reach new heights and discoveries that will earn Belarus recognition around the world,” he said.

The main goal of the forum is to bring women in science together and elevate their role, highlight and promote their contribution to the country’s socio-economic development, and inspire young people to pursue careers in science and academia. A plenary session of the forum will be followed by thematic sections at the National Academy of Sciences and Belarusian State University. Particular attention will be given to the track “Life in Detail: Biomedicine and Biotechnology,” where representatives of the scientific community will deliver reports. Other sections include “Materials of the Future and Technologies,” “The Digital Universe,” “Digital Progress Without Moral Degradation: The Role of the Humanities,” “Social Sciences: The Foundation of Sustainable Life,” and “Young Women in Science: Contribution to Science and Prospects for Strengthening the Country’s Economy.”
