Veteran of the Great Patriotic War Valentina Baranova from Grodno receives congratulations on the upcoming Victory Day

MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) - About 1,500 veterans of the Great Patriotic War and about 8,500 people affected by the war (mostly former prisoners of concentration camps) live in Belarus today, Belarusian Deputy Labor and Social Security Minister Marina Artemenko told reporters, BelTA has learned.

Every year the ranks of veterans are decreasing. The "youngest" veterans are now 96 years old.

These days the war veterans are celebrated across the country. They receive financial assistance, invited to festive rallies, flower ceremonies, including in social service institutions. Public associations and youth organizations are actively involved in these festive events. The launch of socially important facilities is also timed to coincide with 9 May.

By the decision of the head of state, the government pays financial assistance by 9 May. This year, its size has been increased: Br850 (for persons affected by the war) and Br2,000 (for participants and disabled war veterans). The payment of financial aid will continue until 4 May. To date, 10,000 people have received it for a total of Br9.5 million.
