Slavianski Bazaar: Vitebsk 2018 contest prizewinners announced on Summer Amphitheater stage

Slavianski Bazaar: Vitebsk 2018 contest prizewinners announced on Summer Amphitheater stage
16 Jul 2018

The festival life in Vitebsk did not stop for a minute: exhibitions, concerts, theater meetings, youth art parades. However, by tradition, the winners of the International Song Contest Vitebsk 2018 were not known until the closing ceremony to keep the intrigue. This year 21 countries sent their vocalists for the contest and only 15 made it to the final. According to the rules, the jury will not award the Grand Prix if they believe the standard is not met. This nuance makes the Vitebsk contest more interesting, exciting and unpredictable!

In 2018 the international jury was, as always, star-studded. It was led by People's Artist of Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, composer and songwriter Alexander Morozov, popular singer and actress Natalia Oreiro (Uruguay), prima of Kazakhstan Roza Rymbayeva, singer and TV presenter Robertino Loretti (Italy), and TV presenter and producer Olga Shliager (Belarus). For three nights in a row they listened, watched and evaluated the singers to decide who is most deserving of the Grand Prix.

The vocal marathon started on 13 July as singers from 21 countries presented the song in their native language. The most striking performances were given by Ukraine’s Mila Nitich who danced on high heels to a folk song, emotional singers from Egypt and Malta Tarek Yasser and Kurt Calleja, Lithuania’s Grazvydas who had wanted to take part in the contest for a long time, and Poland’s Silvia who sang about true love. The most exotic contestants were Dafne Celada from Mexico and Mohamed from Guinea. By the way, the latter started taking music lessons just two years before… However, only 15 contestants made it to the final. Singers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Mexico, Azerbaijan, Guinea and Egypt were eliminated.

The finalists proceeded to a two-day grand finale that took place on the main stage of the Slavianski Bazaar festival. On the first day they performed a popular Slavonic song accompanied by the National Academic Concert Orchestra of Belarus under the baton of Maestro Mikhail Finberg. The second day was dedicated to international hits. The preliminary results got everyone guessing!

When the scores were totaled up, the results of the contest were announced: Belarus’ Evgeny Kurchich and Silvia from Poland shared the third place (151 points). Ukraine’s Mila Nitich came second (154 points). The top scores were given to Marcel Rosca from Romania and Amre from Kazakhstan. They both scored 156 points. It was not before the closing ceremony that the jury announced their final decision – the Grand Prix of the International Song Contest Vitebsk 2018 went to Marcel Rosca, while talented Amre took the first prize.
