Mount of Glory
6 May 2015

The renovated Mount of Glory Memorial, one of the most recognizable Victory symbols in Belarus, was reopened after renovations in the run-up to the big day. The famous memorial, built to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the country’s liberation from the Nazis, perpetuated the valiance and courage of soldiers and partisans. In July 1944 a 105,000-strong Hitler army was surrounded and destroyed here next to the Minsk-Moscow highway during the war’s biggest operation Bagration… Soil for the Mount of Glory was brought from all corners of Belarus, the cities-heroes of Moscow, Leningrad, Volgograd, Sevastopol, Odessa, Kiev and the legendary Brest Hero Fortress...

The Mount of Glory monument underwent thorough renovations in the run-up to the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory. The mosaic panels were spruced up, the granite observation deck and stairs were renovated, the grass turf replaced and the illuminating concept reconsidered. Light-emitting diodes in yellow and red illuminate the Mount of Glory on the inside and symbolize the Eternal Flame. Floodlights are also projected from the feet of the monument up to the highest point of the monument the four bayonets which represent the four fronts on which divisions of the Red Army, partisans and members of other underground organizations successfully completed the liberation of Belarus.
