War commemorative campaign wraps up in Brest Fortress

War commemorative campaign wraps up in Brest Fortress
22 Apr 2020

The international commemorative campaign “To the Glory of the Common Victory!” timed to the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory is on the home stretch now. It is symbolic that its first stage rounded off in the westernmost Belarusian stronghold – Brest and the legendary Brest Hero Fortress. In June 1941, its defenders held out against the Nazi invaders for the record 32 days! Brest was the last city in the territory of the country to be liberated by the Soviet army on 28 July 1944. On 22 April 2020, the fortress hosted a solemn commemorative meeting and a handover ceremony of capsules with soil collected from the places of military glory and war memorials of Brest Oblast (a total of 929 sites) in the St Nicholas Garrison Church. A capsule with soil from 24 sites in Brest was added to the other ones.

The campaign “To the Glory of the Common Victory!” kicked off in May 2019 and encompassed the whole Belarus, from Minsk and regional capitals to small villages. It took the marathon participants a year to reconstruct the chronology of the war events, follow the routes of fierce battles marked by memorials, monuments, and obelisks, and pay tribute to heroes who fought on the frontline of the Great Patriotic War for every inch of their Motherland to their last breath.

The first and the largest stage of the campaign to collect soil from places of military glory and compile a historical overview is over. Plans are in place to take more than 100 capsules with soil from all war memorials in Belarus to the All Saints Church ahead of celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory. The international campaign will culminate in a solemn ceremony to place the capsules into the crypt of the church on 9 May 2020. The event will feature heads of state, ambassadors, and leaders of public associations. More about the commemorative meeting in the Brest Fortress, including the flower laying ceremony at the Courage monument and a handover ceremony of the capsules in St Nicholas Garrison Church in our story.
