Flame of Peace in Belarus: 2nd European Games Flame travels through Brest Oblast

Flame of Peace in Belarus: 2nd European Games Flame travels through Brest Oblast
12 May 2019

The Flame of Peace was lit in Rome on 3 May to launch the countdown towards the start of the 2nd European Games in Minsk. Among the torchbearers are prominent athletes and outstanding people of Belarus. Within nine days the European Games 2019 symbol traveled thousands of kilometers, starting its way in sunny Italy. Despite a snowstorm, Belarusian climbers took the flame to the Europe’s biggest mountain, Mont Blanc. The Flame of Peace also received a warm welcome in a number of European countries, including Ljubljana, Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, Brno, and Warsaw. Brest Oblast welcomed the flame in Belarus on 12 May.

The Flame of Peace handover ceremony took place at the Belarusian-Polish border checkpoint Varshavsky Most. The flame was taken over by Belarusian Olympic champion, Brestnative Yulia Nestsiarenka.

It was no coincidence that Brest became the first Belarusian city to welcome the torch relay. This year Brest is marking its 1,000th birthday, and the Flame of Peace welcome ceremony has become another highlight in a series of millennium celebration events. In June 1941 Brest Fortress was the first to face the German invaders. Its heroic defense in the first days of war became a legend, an example of incredible strength and courage, a testimony to the infinite value of peace.

"Brest Fortress is the western gate of the country. We want to show the participants and guests of the 2nd European Games, from the very first minutes of their stay in Belarus, the charm, beauty, hospitality and openness of Belarusians. I am confident that the Flame of Peace will inspire Belarusian athletes to perform their best,” Brest Oblast Vice Governor Gennady Borisyuk said.

On 12-13 May, the Flame of Peace was carried through the central streets of Brest by well-known Belarusians, including natives of Brest Oblast. The route also included five cities: Kamenets, Pinsk, Mikashevichi, Baranovichi and Kossovo.
